Are the winter olympics for the rich?

This visualization shows 165 of the world's countries that participated in the Summer and Winter Olympics at least one time between 1992 and 2012. The visualization allows the user to see which of these countries are the richest, the poorest, and won medals. It also shows that the Summer Olympics attract nearly twice as many participant countries and that lower income countries are less likely to win a medal, especially in the Winter Olympics. With this visualization the user can see that fewer countries participate in the Winter Olympics, and even fewer poor countries win medals.
